A Spiritual Journey
Bahá'ís believe in the One true God. Baha’u’llah teaches us that God is unknowable in His Essence. He is the Creator of this universe, the earth and all that is therein. Since that which has been created cannot understand its Creator, no matter how learned or knowledgeable we are, we will always be unable to understand the nature of His Supreme Being. The reason behind our creation, as told by Baha’u’llah, is His Love. He says:
“O Son of Man! I loved thy creation, hence I created thee. Wherefore do thou love Me, that I may name thy name and fill thy soul with the spirit of life”
Throughout the ages, the concept of the existence of the soul has been conceived by all the Divine Manifestations of God. In His revelations, Baha’u’llah affirms,
“Know verily, that the soul is a sign of God, a heavenly gem whose reality the most learned of man has failed to grasp...It is the first among all created things to declare excellence of its Creator, the first to recognize His Glory, to cleave to His Truth, and to bow down in adoration to Him.”
The true purpose of our lives is to know God and to attain His presence, which can be attained only by walking on a path of service. This path enables us to develop the innate qualities imbued in our soul.
Praying, fasting and serving the community are essential pillars to a spiritual life. To strengthen the bonds between God and humanity, the Baha’is along with their friends, families and colleagues carry out acts of collective devotion, praying together for the betterment and advancement of society.
